Minor servicing and annual maintenance for your harpsichord or spinet
Unlike the piano, the harpsichord is a living instrument that requires a specific organological approach. Maintaining a plucked-string instrument goes far beyond simple tuning; it is a delicate balance of tension, precise voicing (becquetage), and the careful selection of materials.
As an "Artisan d’Art", I assist harpsichordists amateurs, professionals, and conservatories alike in the preservation of their musical heritage.
In addition to the routine maintenance performed by the harpsichordist such as tuning or replacing a single plectrum or string an annual professional service is recommended to keep the instrument in optimal condition.
For a well-maintained instrument, 2 to 4 hours are generally sufficient to carry out minor repairs, even out the regulation of the jacks, and harmonize the tone. This annual visit prevents issues from accumulating and helps anticipate future maintenance needs.
For instruments that have been neglected or haven't been serviced in a long time, a more extensive overhaul will be necessary, typically requiring between 8 and 12 hours of work. This often involves a complete replacement of the plectra and a full voicing, or even a complete restringing or shimming (flipotage) of the soundboard.
As a harpsichord maker, I carry out major restoration work and complex maintenance directly at my workshop located in Montpon-Ménestérol 24700. For on-site services, I regularly intervene within a local radius around Montpon.
To optimize travel costs, I also organize scheduled group service tours in my three key sectors: around Pau and Oloron (Béarn 64), as well as around Bellême (Orne 61) and Le Mans (Sarthe 72).
